Trucking up the Newport Coast, leaving the OC behind.

Whew. Well, I apologize for such a long pause on the blogging, but exciting things have been afoot. I also apologize for never revealing the Tiny Kitchen Remodel in its fullest, because now there’s no need.

Yes folks, there’s a new kitchen in town. In fact, it’s a new town and a new home. The Husband and I packed up the furry kids, most of the house and the surprisingly large amount of kitchen equipment I have and put it in a U-Haul. We survived the freeways of Los Angeles (see This Is LALA Land for more info on that—she’s a stronger woman than I) and crossed into our hallowed land of Santa Barbara. Continue reading

Guest Post: My Sister Mary’s Baking Extravaganza

A veritable cornucopia of Christmas treats!

A veritable cornucopia of Christmas treats!

Since the Tiny Kitchen’s been in the middle of a move (full story to unfold shortly!), my sister Mary kindly volunteered to share her baking story with my lovely followers. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and are looking forward to a wonderful New Year’s Eve celebration. And to my UK friends, happy Boxing Day. (To find out what I baked this year, click here.)

Last year, Jennifer and I shared with you the Myers family holiday traditions: the Baked Cheese Fondue, my mother baking goodies for friends, colleagues and neighbors and my best friend Tina and I taking up the baking goodies tradition for our friends, neighbors and colleagues. I also shared with all of you the Nut Roll recipe that has been a long standing holiday tradition in the Myers family, and as Jennifer stated last year, “it’s just not Christmas without it!”. Check Out My [Paleo] Buns

2 Dec

LambBurgers6There’s been a heck of a lot going on at the Tiny Kitchen household, and I haven’t been experimenting with paleo recipes as much as I’ve wanted to. Until this week. I knew we were going to have lamb burgers, and even though I’d saved a big, beautiful collard green leaf from my bi-weekly basket from Alegría Farms, I was wanting a bun.LambBurgers3

Yes, a BUN. You know, to wrap your burger around and soak up all the flavors. Unlike the gluten-free gang, I can’t use rice flour, and definitely not cornmeal. So then I got an idea—I know, it’s shocking, but there you go. I’d seen a recipe for paleo scones and I thought: Hey, maybe a few scones could work like a burger bun! And I’ve got that muffin-top pan…god knows why I bought that thing, but it’s going to come in handy today.

But then I got smart and checked out a great savory muffin recipe at Simply Living Healthy (which has now become my new favorite blogger). EUREKA! Continue reading

Thai-Flavored Pork Meatballs (Paleo & Gluten-Free)

25 Nov

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. I’m writing a post that has nothing to do with Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving-related/leftover food recipes. Mainly it’s because I don’t have any. I’ve been a bit at a loss this year—I didn’t have to make anything for the two Thanksgiving meals we had except my Brussels sprouts—so the Tiny Kitchen has been a bit quiet. Continue reading

Curried Sunflower Dip (And Giveaway Result!)

11 Nov

Today’s first order of business is to congratulate Yvonne, one of my commenters, on winning the Sweet & Easy Vegan cookbook! Yvonne, since you’re not one of my regular followers, please get in touch so I can get your information to get the cookbook sent to you.

The second order of business is, of course, a recipe. I keep trying new recipes from the excellent cookbook Eat Raw, Eat Well by Douglas McNish. Everything I’ve tried has been delicious, and I keep making myself try more recipes, as it’s so good for your body to get raw, fresh produce in your body. Continue reading

Virtual Vegan Potluck 2: Mushroom, Leek and Kale Cottage Pies

31 Oct

I loved participating in the first Virtual Vegan Potluck—what a great concept it is! I get so much of my inspiration in the Tiny Kitchen from other blogs, even if there are parts of it that aren’t friendly to my stomach. It just makes me more creative!

Like this recipe. I wanted something that would be both vegan and paleo for this potluck; after all, it’s no fun making something you can’t eat. I had a ton of ideas, but not enough time to try them all out, and this idea seemed like a winner. Something perfect for the fall weather that finally arrived in California. Something to put in the oven, since it’s cool enough to turn it on. Plus, something orange to celebrate the season! Continue reading

Vegan Cupcakes and a Vegan Cookbook Giveaway!

21 Oct

I’ve been a fan of Robin Asbell’s cookbooks for years, so when her latest one, Sweet & Easy Vegan, came out, I immediately wanted it. How lucky for me that she sent me one so that I could blog about it! And, in addition to that, I got to be part of my second Virtual Vegan Potluck. My third will be next week, so keep your eyes peeled for that—it will not be just a vegan dish, but a paleo dish as well! Continue reading

One-Pot Chicken Dinner with Apples and Butternut Squash

14 Oct

We actually had some cooler weather this week. Scratch that—we had cooler weather and RAIN. And I love a bit of rain, especially after 11 years of living in the UK, I’m happy when it rains here because it feels like it only happens for five minutes at a time. In England, jeez, it would literally rain non-stop for a month or more. I do think it actually rains more in Seattle than London, but I can’t tell you for sure—but that was a heck of a lot of rain.

And here it seems to only rain at night, which was irritating me this year. I like to be all cozy inside watching the rain on the windows, cup of tea in hand and, if I do go out, I break out the wellies and an umbrella. It’s hard to watch the rain in the dark, so I was very disappointed that the rain was so shy during the day. Which made Thursday morning’s events even more perplexing. Continue reading

Tropical Ice Cream for a Heatwave

30 Sep

I was going to post about my trip to San Francisco last week, detailing all the great food I ate and what I learned about my stomach’s reactions to certain things, but the heatwave in SoCal this weekend has totally trumped that post.

It’s been a long, hot summer here in Orange County. Which is fine, but we don’t usually get hit with any temps over 80 degrees F here on the coast. I mean, it’s part of the price we pay to live here, I thought, our payback for dealing with all the tourists leaving garbage in front of our house. (Really, people? Were you raised by wolves?) Continue reading
