The Husband’s Bloody Mary or Maria Recipe

15 Apr

The Husband's special recipe.

I am so spoiled at home. The Husband is just the best ever. He does the laundry. He makes me fine drinks. He generally treats me like a princess! Yep, it’s a regular love-fest around here, and I’m not ashamed to say it!

For those of you who were eyeing the Bloody Mary from my Easter post, here’s the recipe. There’s only one problem: The Husband uses home made salsa in his, which I haven’t posted a recipe for yet. And it’s not because I’m being stingy, it’s because we haven’t perfected it yet. Continue reading

I’m Joining the Automattic WorldWide 5k Challenge. Are you?

10 Apr

I’m up for this! I’m actually going to be running 11 miles that day, training for the OC Half Marathon on May 6, so I can count 5k of that to this fun, global goal. Challenge accepted!

(Besides, I’ve got to work off those pumpkin chocolate chip cupcakes…)

Here’s why I started running in the first place, in case anyone’s interested. Mom and Steve Piet: I miss you!

I found a flyer for Team in Training in 2008 when one of my best friends from high school was struggling with cancer for the second time in his young life. He was only 37, and I didn’t know what to do to help him. I had always wanted to try to run an endurance race, and I thought that the support of a group like Team in Training would be a great way to do it, plus help support cancer research and run in Steve’s name. I had also lost my mother to cancer when I was only 22 (six weeks after my marriage to my first husband!), so there was two reasons to join Team in Training.

I loved Team in Training, and the support I received was amazing—not just to help me with the running, but also emotionally—when Steve passed away two weeks before the race, everyone on my team was there for me. With the names of Steve, my mother, and many others who had struggled with or passed from cancer sewn to my shirt, I finished my first half-marathon (San Diego Rock and Roll) in 2 hours and 22 minutes.

I was hooked! I joined Team in Training again, but as a mentor. I ran my second half-marathon, the Santa Barbara half in 2009, in just 2 hours and 6 minutes. The third time I signed up with Team in Training, as a mentor again, was in 2010, and my sister signed up too. Both of her ankles had been badly broken when she was 18, and one is now fused, but it did not deter her (even though her orthopedic surgeon thought she was crazy!) I developed bursitis in my knee and couldn’t run, which was fine in the end because I walked it with my sister at my side through San Francisco at the 2010 Women’s Half Marathon. We both love our Tiffany necklace!

This will be the first time I’m doing a race without Team in Training. I’ve been struggling with a bad hamstring, but I know I’ll finish. I might not beat my 2 hours 6 minute time, but I am doing the race with my step-sister, so it will just leave one sister I’ve not done a race with! I’ll see if I can get her out one of these days. I’ll be wearing my Team in Training jersey, or perhaps a new shirt to honor Steve and my mother, at the OC race, for sure.

I look forward to getting the Beach Cities medal in 2013, and maybe signing back up with Team in Training for the Long Beach or Surf City race. It’s a great organization I’m proud to have been a part of.

It wasn’t just a one-time event! The Automattic Worldwide WP 5k is back again in 2012! Set your timers for April 29th!

At Automattic we work from all over the world, and we use internal blogs for socializing and exchanging non-work ideas in addition to making WordPress.com and our other products more awesome. One of the things we’re really concerned about is staying healthy – we even have an entire internal blog dedicated to fitness.

We had a great idea: Get all Automatticians from 79 cities & 24 countries to run/walk a 5k on the same day! This way we can get some exercise together as a company even though we’re apart (though we won’t rule out a softball or Texas scramble at our next meetup).

A year later, and there are now 105 Automatticians we hope will take part in the 5k all around the world in 2012.

We want…

Stop, You Guys Are Spoiling Me!

9 Apr

Okay, I lied. Don’t stop—I’m loving it! Recognition from my peers is so gratifying, especially when those peers are super fantabulous themselves. I’ve been lax in thanking my nominators, but things have just been so crazy with work and the course that I’m teaching at UCI (on blogging, natch). But it’s been on my mind and I want to thank my nominators and show some love to some other bloggers! Continue reading

Easter Brunch Fruit Salad

8 Apr

Yes, I live in SoCal. And we’re not all hippie, granola-loving freaks, but I was nominated to bring the fruit salad today, so I did. My sister Mary bagged the coffee cake, and a very good job she did too, and sister Laura made some great deviled eggs (hmm, leftovers of both in the fridge…BRB…!). And the parents pulled off another wonderful meal, with plentiful pancakes, ham and even waffles. Continue reading

In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion: Lamb Shank in Adobo Sauce

7 Apr

I know that they say spring comes in like a lion, and out like a lamb, but this recipe will make it the opposite. It is so super flavorful that you could literally put this sauce on anything and make it delicious.

VEGANS/VEGETARIANS: Please have a look at this sauce! It’s totally vegan and SO delicious! I can’t wait to use it on tofu, tempeh or jackfruit for tacos! Just ignore the stuff about the lamb. Please.

And this one goes out to Girl in a Food Frenzy, because I know she’s “down under” and likes lamb as much as I do. I also think my friends in the UK will love this too (well, Tracey won’t love the lamb part). I’m not sure if they’ll be able to get all the special dried chiles over there unless they order them from the Internet… Continue reading

Vietnamese Garlic Black Pepper Sauce

5 Apr

The Husband was away last weekend on a trip with his friend, so I took the opportunity to make something with tofu. My friends in the blogosphere have come up with so many tantalizing recipes frankly I was overwhelmed with choice. Plus I knew I had a bunch of Asian veggies in the fridge that needed to be used up, so it seemed to make sense to throw together a stir fry.

I didn’t feel like making a Chinese sauce, and I remembered the garlic sauce from Thai Bros. around the corner that I had tasted just a week or so prior. I had a hankering for it, and thought I could probably whip it up myself if I had a guide. Continue reading

Tiny Kitchen Remodel?

4 Apr

Could this be the "Slightly Bigger Kitchen"?

The Husband has been throwing around the idea that there could be a Tiny Kitchen Remodel. We have a possibility of some free or low-cost, slightly pre-used cabinets, plus my Dad to design, project manage and complete said design. Continue reading

Pumpkin Chocolate-Chip Cupcakes

31 Mar

Our neighbors, and friends, went away a week or so ago. I call them Pal and Am, fondly, but they are really Al and Pam. We have an arrangement with them where we watch each others’ cats when any of us are out of town, but this time Cookie, their older cat, was a little under the weather. I won’t go into details, but I did suggest trying to give her some puréed pumpkin.

I didn’t promise it would work, which is good, because neither of the cats even tasted it. The potassium I was supposed to give Cookie was nasty—if it tasted anything like it smelled, the poor girl was in trouble. Luckily, the poor kitty’s bad day was someone else’s delicious baked treat… Continue reading

I’ve Been Nominated AGAIN!

26 Mar

Nominate her, or I'll get angry. And you don't want to see me when I'm angry.

Okay, everyone, now you’re spoiling me! But I don’t mind being spoiled. In fact, I love it. So any further nominations for the Versatile Blogger Award (or any other blogging award—don’t be shy!) will be very gratefully accepted.

Thank you so much to DogDaz for the nomination, but also much, much more. Continue reading

Pesto, Part Deux: Poulet

26 Mar

Occasionally, The Husband does come up with some lovely ideas for me to try out in the kitchen—long-time readers will remember that the bacon-crumble apple pies were his idea.

As usual, we bought our weekend chicken from the farmers market, and that chive pesto was still hanging around in the fridge—bright and perky, by the way, even over a week old. I love those glass snap-lock containers! He suggested we combine them both, putting the pesto under the skin. Since it was a cold and rainy Sunday yesterday, a roast chicken seemed just the thing for dinner. Continue reading
